Thanksgiving in Indiana

I had two Thanksgiving dinners, one with Grandpa at the Village of Heritage and one with Greg, Ethan and Janel at Mitch and Dawn's. Grandpa and I had turkey and stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes plus pumpkin cobbler and coffee in the dining hall and then watched a documentary on crabbing in the Bering Sea.

Mitch reported that the Galloping Gobbler 5K race earlier in the day was a resounding success with over 300 entries. Time to gear up for the Huff.

Mitch fixed a beautiful ham in the roaster and I brought a romaine lettuce salad with raspberries, feta and toasted pecans with a raspberry vinaigrette, sauteed tarragon green beans in a white wine sauce, steamed carrots and baby vidalia onions with capers and some Lindt chocolates. Janel brought mashed white potatoes, bourbon sweet potatoes, rolls and citrus biscotti to die for. Ethan brought bottles of "Two-buck Chuck," a red table wine from California that is all the rage. Dawn fixed a roasted pear and cranberry accompaniment to the ham and fresh corn bread with red peppers and there was a whole grain bread from a local artisanal bakery, plus assorted munchies to begin and some wonderful baked pumpkin, leek, goat cheese spread. If anything about the meal was forgotten, it was because there was such an abundance of everything. With a tempting array of wines complementing the meal and an amazing assortment of exotic and homemade liqueurs and coffee to end the meal, it was truly a feast to be thankful for. And the conversation was lively and warm.

Full disclosure: I did not prepare the ham; Dawn did. While I have often prepared the turkey in the past - I did not do the ham.
The ham was quite delicious and the pear glaze/sauce was great. The ham was from Hill's Market in Waynedale. (south side of Fort Wayne) The Hill's have been in business for a long time.
Their meat just LOOKS so much better than in the grocery stores.
Yes, the Galloping Gobbler went well. Photos of this year's race are posted at: http://community.webshots.com/album/511234431GbRmMc
